Starmer Confirms UK Will Not Join Iran War, Emphasizes Diplomacy and European Partnerships

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has firmly stated that the United Kingdom will not participate directly in the ongoing conflict with Iran or deploy troops to the Middle East. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Starmer warned that prolonging the war could inflict serious economic damage on both the UK and the global economy.

“The ongoing war in Iran is not Britain’s war,” Starmer said. “Our priority is the safety of our citizens and securing a stable future for generations to come. The government’s focus must remain on strengthening partnerships with our European allies and pursuing diplomatic solutions.”

Starmer’s remarks come after US President Donald Trump criticized the UK leader for refusing to join the military campaign, calling him a coward and claiming he was not a modern-day Winston Churchill. In response, Starmer made it clear that the UK will not be pushed into conflict under foreign pressure.

The Prime Minister noted that Britain is actively monitoring the situation and engaging in diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. He also announced that the UK will host key meetings with allied countries this week to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime trade route, with 35 nations reportedly backing the initiative.

European countries have consistently refused to join the conflict, even as Trump has pressured them to take part. In addition, Trump has threatened to reconsider the United States’ NATO membership over what he perceives as a lack of support from European allies, labeling the alliance a “paper alliance” and questioning its credibility.

Starmer’s stance reflects the UK government’s commitment to diplomacy over military engagement, emphasizing long-term strategic interests and economic stability amid escalating regional tensions.
