German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has warned that the threat posed by drones is “high” and announced that the government will introduce new security measures, including empowering the armed forces to shoot down drones in certain situations.
Speaking to journalists in Berlin on Saturday, Dobrindt emphasized the growing risks drones pose to both critical infrastructure and public safety.
“There is a threat that can be classified as high when it comes to drones. It is an abstract threat, but very concrete in individual cases,” he said.
Europe on Alert After Drone Incursions
The heightened concern comes after a series of drone incursions in Denmark disrupted air traffic across parts of the country multiple times over the past week. German authorities have also been investigating drone sightings, raising fears of cross-border security risks.
Officials worry that drones could be used to target airports, energy facilities, or large gatherings of people.
Planned Security Reforms
Dobrindt said the government will revise Germany’s aviation security laws to enable greater involvement of the military in counter-drone operations. This could include authorizing the Bundeswehr to intercept or shoot down drones in high-risk scenarios.
“It’s about being prepared so that critical infrastructure or large gatherings of people, for example, can be protected,” he added.
The planned measures reflect a growing European consensus on tightening drone security as the technology becomes more widespread and harder to regulate.
For now, German officials are working closely with European partners to monitor drone activity and strengthen defenses against potential threats.
