Trump Slaps 100% Tariff on Imported Medicines, Raising Pressure on India

Washington / New Delhi — The United States has announced sweeping new tariffs on several imported goods, with the most dramatic impact on the pharmaceutical sector.

According to reports, Washington has imposed 50% tariffs on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, 30% on furniture, and 25% on heavy-duty trucks.

However, the most consequential move is the imposition of a 100% tariff on imported medicines, set to take effect on October 1.

President Donald Trump, in a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, said the decision was taken primarily in the interest of U.S. national security. He added that any company establishing pharmaceutical plants within the United States would be exempt from these tariffs.

The new tariffs are expected to deal a major blow to India, one of the world’s largest exporters of pharmaceuticals. India currently supplies more than one-third of all medicines used in the U.S., amounting to roughly $10 billion annually, according to India Today.

The tariff escalation comes at a time when relations between Washington and New Delhi have been strained in recent months. The U.S. had already imposed 50% tariffs on several Indian exports, creating significant hurdles for Indian businesses.

Analysts suggest the move could disrupt global supply chains and drive up drug prices in the United States, while further straining U.S.-India trade ties.
