Govt Moves to Import 100,000 Tons of Sugar to Stabilize Prices

The government has decided to import 100,000 metric tons of sugar through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).

TCP officials confirmed that bids for the import were invited today, with the tender-opening ceremony conducted in the presence of all stakeholders. General Manager TCP Shiraz Ali Shahzad formally opened the tender in front of the participating parties.

In a step to ensure transparency, representatives of Transparency International also attended the ceremony.

The decision comes amid concerns over rising sugar prices and supply shortages across the country. Officials said the import will help ease pressure on local markets, especially with rising consumption needs.

It may be recalled that the government had earlier approved the import of 200,000 metric tons of sugar on August 21, also through TCP tenders, as part of its strategy to build reserves and curb speculative price hikes.

Authorities maintain that the latest import initiative is crucial to ensuring market stability ahead of the upcoming festive season, when demand for sugar typically spikes.
