Govt Seeks Bar Associations' Support for Constitutional Amendment, Engages PTI for Consensus

The federal government has initiated consultations with various stakeholders, including bar associations and opposition parties, to build consensus on a proposed constitutional amendment. Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar will lead discussions with representatives from bar associations, briefing them on the draft amendment and seeking their support.

In an effort to reach an agreement, the government has also reached out to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), requesting them to review the proposed draft. Sources indicate that Prime Minister’s advisor Rana Sanaullah has urged PTI members to consult with party founder Imran Khan about the amendment. The government’s outreach to PTI comes as part of a broader strategy to engage opposition parties, signaling a willingness to include diverse political voices in the decision-making process.

The government’s move comes as it aims to secure backing from key stakeholders before finalizing the constitutional amendment. Law Minister Tarar is scheduled to meet bar associations today, where he will present the government’s position and work toward developing a unified stance. The focus of the consultations is to ensure that the amendment is well understood and supported by legal and political groups alike.

According to reports, Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq hosted a luncheon in honor of detained PTI members earlier this week. In the spirit of collaboration, Rana Sanaullah has been in contact with both the opposition and government leaders, emphasizing the importance of dialogue.

Rana Sanaullah further explained that PTI has requested to see the working paper on the proposed amendment, which will be formalized into a draft after consultations. He also highlighted that the government is committed to an ongoing dialogue and aims to conduct a comprehensive consultation by the first week of October. Despite some disagreements on minor issues, the government hopes to foster a spirit of cooperation across political lines.
