Hafiz Naeem Welcomes Reduction in Electricity Prices, Calls for More Relief

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has welcomed the government's decision to lower electricity prices, calling it a positive step but not enough to ease the burden on citizens.

"This Should Be the First, Not the Last Relief," Says JI Chief

Speaking exclusively to Geo News, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman stated that while the electricity tariff reduction is a victory for the people, the government must go further in cutting costs.

"This should not be the last relief measure but the first step in a series of reductions," he urged. "There is still plenty of room for lowering electricity prices."

JI’s Role in Pushing for Price Reduction

He credited the Jamaat-e-Islami movement for pressuring the government into negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), leading to this relief measure.

“The government acknowledged our demand as legitimate, and an agreement with the IPPs for further talks is a significant achievement for our struggle,” he said.

‘Haq Do Awam Ko’ Movement to Continue

Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman reaffirmed JI’s commitment to its ‘Haq Do Awam Ko’ movement, which advocates for affordable electricity and economic justice.

"Our position remains clear: electricity tariffs should be based on the average production cost, ensuring fairness for the people," he asserted. "The youth must join the struggle, as we are now seeing real results from our efforts."

Shehbaz Sharif’s Relief Package

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently announced a significant reduction in electricity prices for domestic and industrial consumers as part of a broader effort to ease economic pressures.

However, opposition parties and activists continue to push for greater transparency and deeper price cuts to counter the rising cost of living in Pakistan.
