CRIME
istrict of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
According to KP Inspector General of Police (IGP) Zulfiqar Hameed, the first blast targeted a police checkpost in the jurisdiction of the Baliamina police station. No personnel were deployed at the post at the time, he said. The second, more powerful improvised explosive device (IED) detonated moments later near a police vehicle en route to inspect the site, killing three officers.
Kohat Division Regional Police Officer (RPO) Abbas Majeed told reporters that police had been conducting a search and strike operation in the area since morning. The checkpost had been cordoned off earlier, and the first IED exploded around 2pm.
SP Asad Zubair and his team were heading toward the site when their vehicle was hit by a second explosion. The RPO said the blast, planted by militants identified as “Fitna-al-Khawarij” — the state’s designation for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) — was far more powerful than the first. Two officers died on the spot, while SP Zubair succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Following the blasts, police and counterterrorism units launched a large-scale search operation in the area.
Official Condemnations
KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly act” aimed at demoralising law enforcement. He convened an emergency meeting of the apex committee and directed IGP Zulfiqar Hameed to submit an immediate report.
“The sacrifices of our brave policemen will not go in vain,” the chief minister said, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
President Asif Ali Zardari also denounced the incident, terming it an act of “India-backed Fitna-al-Hindustan terrorists.” He paid tribute to the martyred officers, praising the resolve of the police in defending national peace.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and former KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur likewise expressed deep sorrow over the incident, acknowledging the continued sacrifices of KP’s security personnel in combating terrorism.
Rising Terror Threat
The Hangu blasts come amid a renewed wave of militant activity in KP and Balochistan following the breakdown of the ceasefire between the TTP and the government in November 2022. The banned outfit has since intensified attacks on police and other security agencies.
Just five days earlier, police foiled an attack on a station in Bannu, killing three TTP militants. Earlier in October, rocket and gun attacks targeted police in South Waziristan and Bannu, marking a troubling resurgence in militant operations across the region.
Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating terrorism, as Pakistan mourns yet another sacrifice in the fight for peace and stability.
