A shocking 219 people have been crushed to death by heavy vehicles in Karachi over the past 308 days, according to data shared by rescue officials, highlighting the city’s growing road safety crisis.
Overall, 733 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents this year, including 569 men, 72 women, 70 children, and 22 girls. Rescue officials also reported that 10,651 people sustained injuries, among them 505 children and 154 girls.
The report revealed that heavy vehicles were responsible for a significant portion of the fatalities — with 40 deaths caused by dumpers, 82 by trailers, 49 by water tankers, 19 by Mazdas, and 29 by buses.
Rescue officials described the situation as alarming, citing poor enforcement of traffic laws, unregulated heavy vehicle movement, and lack of pedestrian safety measures as major causes of these fatalities.
Traffic analysts and civic bodies have long demanded that the city government impose strict timing restrictions on heavy vehicles, particularly during daytime hours, and enhance road safety awareness to curb the rising number of deaths.
The data underscores the urgent need for stronger traffic regulation, improved road infrastructure, and driver accountability to prevent further loss of life on Karachi’s roads.
