At least four people lost their lives and four others were seriously injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the Pewar area of Parachinar, Upper Kurram district, on Wednesday, police and hospital officials confirmed.

According to District Police Officer (DPO) Habibullah, the explosion took place in Sharamkhel, Pewar, as a group of locals were heading towards nearby hills to collect firewood. “Police teams reached the site immediately and have launched an investigation into the incident,” he said.

The deceased have been identified as Nawab Ali, Amir Hussain, Hidayat Hussain, and Manzar Ali, according to Mir Hassan Jan, the Medical Superintendent of DHQ Parachinar Hospital. The injured — Muhammad Konain, Shafaat Hussain, and Hassan Ghulam — were initially treated at the local hospital and later shifted to Peshawar for advanced medical care.

One of the injured, Hassan Ghulam, speaking to local media, said:

“We were going to the hills to collect firewood when the explosion occurred on the roadside. It was sudden and devastating. I lost my companions and even the horses we were using.”

The blast also killed two horses, highlighting the force of the explosion and the vulnerability of the rural population in conflict-prone areas.

Tribal elders of the region strongly condemned the incident, calling it an act of terrorism aimed at sabotaging peace efforts in the region. They urged the authorities to arrest the perpetrators immediately and conduct a high-level investigation.

This is not the first time Kurram has seen violence in recent months. In December last year, the region witnessed tribal clashes that claimed over 100 lives and left roads blocked for weeks, isolating the area from the rest of the country. The Parachinar-Peshawar highway remained closed following a deadly ambush on a vehicular convoy in Bagan, which killed at least 50 people.

The recurring violence has raised serious concerns about the fragile security situation in Upper Kurram and its impact on local communities striving for peace.
