The much-anticipated Pakistan-India clash in the upcoming T20 World Cup will take place in Colombo on February 8, promising an explosive start to the tournament. However, the cricketing rivalry has already spilled off the pitch as a fresh controversy brews between the two nations.
According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that India has written to the ACC requesting the trophy to be sent directly, claiming that it will not accept it personally from Mohsin Naqvi.
“If our request is ignored, we will raise the matter with the ICC,” Saikia warned, adding that Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have expressed support for India’s stance.
The ACC, meanwhile, has extended an invitation to India to collect the trophy at an official ceremony scheduled for November 10.
Pakistan, anticipating a possible escalation, has reportedly sought legal advice to prepare a response to any move by the Indian board.
In a measured reply, ACC President Mohsin Naqvi confirmed sending a detailed letter to the BCCI, reiterating that the council maintains a neutral stance on political matters. Naqvi noted that India’s letter was received prior to the ACC’s Annual General Meeting and that the issue had been discussed in detail during the session.
“It is appropriate to correct the record, given that your letter has been circulated among ACC members,” Naqvi wrote in response.
This latest diplomatic tussle has added fuel to the already intense cricket rivalry between Pakistan and India, making their T20 World Cup encounter in Colombo one of the most anticipated matches of 2025.
