Indian National Arrested in Japan Over Alleged Rape of Teen Girl in Shiga

Japanese police in Shiga prefecture have arrested a 24-year-old Indian man on suspicion of raping a teenage high school girl, according to Kyoto Shimbun and Tokyo Reporter. The arrest was made by Otsu police on Thursday.

Authorities allege that the man, a temporary worker, choked and assaulted the girl before having non-consensual sexual intercourse with her at a hotel in Otsu city. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 21.

According to police, the man approached the girl — a resident of the prefecture — under the pretext of asking for directions, lured her toward a hotel entrance, and forced her into a room. The suspect has denied the allegations, stating, “I did not force her.”

This disturbing case has emerged amid rising concern over sexual violence in Japan. In May, police arrested a former taxi driver who allegedly drugged and raped dozens of women, collecting over 3,000 videos and images of the assaults inside his taxi or home.

Sexual violence remains a pressing issue in both Japan and India. In India, several high-profile rape and murder cases have shaken the nation:

·       In February 2024, a man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of an Irish tourist in Goa, almost eight years after the crime.

·       In January, a Kolkata police volunteer was convicted and sentenced to life for raping and killing a doctor, triggering nationwide protests.

·       In March, police in Jharkhand’s Dumka district arrested eight men over the gang rape of a Spanish tourist.

·       In 2016, five Indian men were handed life sentences for the rape of a Danish tourist in New Delhi.

The Shiga case is currently under investigation, with further updates expected as Japanese authorities gather more evidence.
