WORLD NEWS

At least ten people, mostly women and children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Halimah al-Saadiyah School in Jabalia an-Nazla, northern Gaza, according to doctors at al-Shifa Hospital and survivors who spoke to Al Jazeera. The school was sheltering more than 1,000 displaced Palestinians at the time of the attack.
The airstrike, which occurred late at night as people slept, caused scenes of horror and devastation.
“I saw the whole area filled with dust – that’s when I realised the strike had hit this place,” said survivor Abu Haitham Khalla.
“The panic, fear, and terror that swept through the school was overwhelming. Tents and classrooms were full of families. Now, it’s blood and rubble.”
According to witnesses, victims included women and children. Ahmed Khalla, another survivor, described gruesome scenes inside a classroom:
“Children torn apart, charred. Women who had done absolutely nothing. I saw a little girl without a head – literally, without a head.”
A Shelter Turned Graveyard
The school had become a temporary sanctuary for displaced families fleeing Israeli military operations in eastern Gaza. The strike destroyed large portions of the structure, turning a place of refuge into a scene of carnage.
“Instead of safety, they were met with death,” said Gaza-based journalist Mohammed al-Khalili. “The smell of blood is everywhere. The attack came before midnight as people slept.”
With no safe zones left in Gaza, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate rapidly.
🔹 Aid Centre Also Targeted
In a separate incident, at least 10 Palestinians were shot dead and 16 injured near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution site in Rafah. Victims were reportedly targeted by Israeli snipers while attempting to obtain food packages, according to Al Jazeera reporter Tareq Abu Azzoum.
“Security contractors and Israeli forces opened fire to disperse the crowds,” Azzoum reported. “People are risking death just to feed their families.”
This marks another tragic episode in a series of attacks on humanitarian locations. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) revealed that at least 798 civilians have been killed near aid distribution points or on humanitarian convoy routes.
“These include 615 deaths around GHF aid sites, and 183 near other humanitarian convoys,” OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani confirmed during a briefing in Geneva.
The GHF began distributing limited aid packages in Gaza in late May, becoming one of the few remaining food lifelines in the besieged enclave.
🔹 Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The latest wave of violence underscores the growing desperation in Gaza. With shelters destroyed, aid seekers targeted, and no safe zones available, humanitarian agencies warn of complete systemic collapse.
Al-Khalili captured the despair:
“The situation is catastrophic. People have left their homes, only to be killed in shelters and aid lines. There’s nowhere left to go.”
International human rights groups and UN agencies have repeatedly condemned the attacks on civilians and humanitarian infrastructure. Calls for an immediate ceasefire and accountability have grown louder.
