The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor has submitted a request for arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Gaza conflict, reports AFP.
The prosecutor is also seeking warrants for Yahya Sinwar and two other top Hamas leaders on similar charges related to the conflict.
According to Karim Khan, the ICC's chief prosecutor, the charges stem from the October 7 attacks on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza, which resulted in a significant loss of civilian lives, with over 34,000 deaths, predominantly women and children.
The allegations against Netanyahu and Gallant include accusations of causing extermination, starvation as a method of war, including the denial of humanitarian relief supplies, and deliberately targeting civilians in conflict situations.
It's important to note that Israel is not a member of the ICC and disputes its jurisdiction over such matters.
The development underscores the heightened tensions and ongoing legal battles surrounding the Gaza conflict, as international bodies continue to grapple with accountability and justice in the region.
