Suicide Bomber Kills 5, Including Taliban Forces, in Kunduz Bank Attack

A suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a bank in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing five people, including Taliban security forces, and wounding seven others, local police confirmed.

The attack targeted a queue of civilians and government workers waiting to collect their salaries from a bank in Kunduz city, the provincial capital.

“A suicide bomber, who had improvised explosive devices, detonated himself,” said Jumadin Khaksar, police spokesman for Kunduz province.

Civilians, civil servants, and Taliban security personnel were among those killed. "The Kunduz Province Police Command is working with relevant organisations to find the perpetrators of the incident and bring them to justice," Khaksar added.

No Immediate Claim of Responsibility

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing so far. In March last year, a similar attack outside a bank in Kandahar killed at least three people. That incident was claimed by the regional chapter of the Islamic State (IS).

Security Challenges Persist

While the number of bomb blasts and suicide attacks has significantly decreased since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, armed groups, including the Islamic State, continue to pose security threats.

The Taliban has repeatedly pledged to maintain security and target remaining threats, but incidents like the Kunduz bombing underscore ongoing challenges in ensuring stability across Afghanistan.

Investigation Underway

Authorities in Kunduz have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
