United States President Donald Trump has made a provocative statement suggesting that Ukraine "may be Russian someday" as he continues to promise a swift resolution to the three-year-old war following Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Speaking during an interview with Fox News on Monday, Trump expressed uncertainty about Ukraine's future while discussing potential peace agreements.
“They may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday,” he remarked.
Talks Over Compensation for U.S. Aid
Trump also emphasized the need for compensation for the extensive military and financial aid provided by the United States to Ukraine.
“We are going to have all this money in there, and I say I want it back. And I told them that I want the equivalent, like $500bn worth of rare earth,” Trump said, adding that Ukraine has "essentially agreed" to the terms.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, confirmed Ukraine's willingness to negotiate with the U.S. on the deal.
Security Guarantees Sought by Ukraine
As part of any ceasefire agreement, Kyiv is seeking strong security guarantees from Washington, including potential NATO membership or the deployment of peacekeeping forces. Ukrainian officials fear that a weak settlement could provide Moscow with an opportunity to regroup for future attacks.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Friday to discuss these concerns.
Ongoing Violence on the Frontlines
Despite diplomatic discussions, violence continues to escalate in Ukraine. Russian forces are advancing in the eastern regions, and both sides have maintained near-nightly airstrikes targeting critical infrastructure.
On Tuesday night, Russian missile and drone attacks struck natural gas production facilities in Ukraine’s Poltava region. Meanwhile, Russia reported a fire at an industrial site in the Saratov region, which Ukraine claimed was an attack on an oil refinery.
Trump's Contact with Putin?
Trump also hinted over the weekend that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the Kremlin has not confirmed any such contact, reiterating that a truce can only be achieved on its terms.
As diplomatic tensions rise and the violence shows no signs of abating, the international community closely watches how Trump's bold assertions and strategic negotiations will impact the trajectory of the war.
