Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, inaugurated the country's new consulate in Damascus on Monday, a symbolic move following a deadly strike on the previous premises, which Iran and Damascus blame on Israel. The strike, occurring last Monday, resulted in the deaths of seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including two generals. The event, attended by Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad, took place in the upscale Mazzeh area, near the site of the destroyed consulate. Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Damascus, including meetings with President Bashar al-Assad, is seen as an assertion of Iran's support for its ally amidst rising tensions. The inauguration follows a regional tour starting in Oman, where calls for de-escalation were made. However, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader warned of increased risks to Israeli embassies in the aftermath of the Damascus attack.
