Iran Unveils New Ballistic Missile and Upgraded Drone Amid Escalating Tensions

TEHRAN: Iran showcased a new solid-fuel ballistic missile and an upgraded attack drone at a military parade on Saturday, state media reported, amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing accusations of arming Russia.

The missile, named the Jihad, was designed by the aerospace wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and has an operational range of 1,000 kilometers, according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA. Meanwhile, the newly upgraded Shahed-136B drone boasts a range of over 4,000 kilometers, offering extended capabilities compared to its predecessor.

Rising Accusations and Denials

Western governments have accused Iran of supplying both drones and ballistic missiles to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine. Despite mounting evidence, Tehran has repeatedly denied these claims. Allegations surfaced earlier this month from Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, leading to new sanctions targeting Iran’s missile program.

The military parade, held in Tehran to commemorate the 1980-88 war with Iraq, saw the attendance of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Addressing the gathering, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s growing deterrent capabilities, claiming, “No demon even thinks about any aggression towards our dear Iran.”

His remarks were followed by a strong condemnation of Israel, as Iran's leadership continued to use the platform to address the broader geopolitical landscape, particularly the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. Pezeshkian underscored Iran's alignment with Islamic unity against Israel.

Calls for Unity Against Israel

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also used the occasion to reiterate his call for Islamic countries to sever economic and political ties with Israel, which he labeled a "malignant cancerous tumor." His speech coincided with rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly around the Israel-Lebanon border where Hezbollah, an Iranian ally, has been increasingly involved in clashes with Israeli forces.

The escalation in fighting in the region, coupled with Iranian support for groups like Hezbollah, has drawn international scrutiny as the risk of broader regional conflict grows.
