Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to undertake a two-day official visit to Pakistan beginning Saturday, August 2, Iranian state media IRNA reported on Wednesday.
According to Iranian Presidential Adviser Mehdi Sanai, President Pezeshkian will arrive in Pakistan on Saturday evening at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the visit, the Iranian head of state will hold official talks and meet cultural and commercial stakeholders to boost bilateral cooperation.
“The relations between the two countries encompass political, economic, religious, and cultural dimensions,” Sanai said in a post on social media platform X, adding that the visit will focus on expanding border cooperation and raising bilateral trade beyond the current $3 billion.
Continuing High-Level Engagement
This marks the second visit by an Iranian president to Pakistan in two years, reflecting growing ties between Tehran and Islamabad. The previous Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, had visited Pakistan in April 2024, a month before his tragic death in a helicopter crash. Raisi’s visit included engagements in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.
President Pezeshkian’s visit had initially been scheduled for late July but was rescheduled for early August. His trip is expected to reinforce the momentum of bilateral engagement that has persisted in spite of regional challenges.
Focus on Regional Diplomacy & Trade
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar previously confirmed that President Pezeshkian’s visit was imminent, expressing hope that the trip would take place in early August. Speaking in New York earlier this month, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to diplomatic solutions amid regional tensions.
“Pakistan supports diplomacy and a wise approach in the region and welcomes all efforts toward de-escalation and dialogue with Iran,” Dar said, adding that he was in close communication with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
Dar also condemned Israeli and U.S. actions targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, emphasizing that dialogue, not confrontation, was the path forward.
High-Level Exchanges in 2024
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Iran twice this year — in May, to attend the memorial of former President Raisi, and later as part of a regional diplomatic tour. During these trips, he met with Iran’s new leadership, including President Pezeshkian and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to friendly ties and regional collaboration.
As President Pezeshkian arrives in Pakistan this weekend, observers expect renewed momentum in cross-border trade initiatives, energy cooperation, and security coordination, especially amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia.
