ISIS Claims Responsibility for Deadly Suicide Bombing in Kabul, Killing at Least Six

The ISIS (ISIL) group has claimed responsibility for a devastating suicide bombing in Kabul that resulted in at least six fatalities and thirteen injuries. The attack took place in the southern Qala-e-Bakhtiar area of Kabul, targeting the Taliban government’s prosecution service. According to ISIS, the bomber, who waited until government employees had finished their shifts, detonated an explosive vest in the middle of a crowd.

ISIL's claim, made through a Telegram post, asserted that the bombing was in retaliation for what they described as the mistreatment of Muslims held in Taliban prisons. While Kabul police reported six deaths and thirteen injuries, ISIL claimed that more than 45 people were killed in the attack.

Despite a general reduction in violence since the Taliban's takeover in 2021, ISIL’s affiliate in the Khorasan region—known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP)—continues to pose a significant threat. The group has been responsible for numerous attacks targeting civilians, foreign nationals, and Taliban officials. The recent attack follows a similar pattern of violence; in March, ISIL claimed a suicide bombing in Kandahar that killed over 20 people, and in 2022, a bombing at an education center in Kabul killed 53, including 46 girls and young women.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid has previously downplayed ISIL's presence in Afghanistan, asserting that the group had been suppressed. Mujahid recently stated that no groups currently pose a significant threat, despite ongoing violence attributed to ISIL.
