Israeli airstrikes killed five Palestinians and injured 18 others on Thursday in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, local health authorities reported, amid rising tensions over the near six-week-old ceasefire.
Medics said one strike on a house in Bani Suhaila east of Khan Younis killed three people, including a baby girl, and wounded 15 others, while another strike in Abassan killed a man and wounded three more. Later, a fifth Palestinian was reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire in Abassan.
Israel’s military confirmed the strikes but said it was unaware of casualties. On Wednesday, Israel had targeted sites across Gaza after members of Hamas fired on its troops, with Gaza medics reporting at least 25 deaths, the highest toll since October 29.
Hamas Reaction:
Hamas condemned the attacks as a “dangerous escalation” and called on Arab mediators, Turkey, and the United States—the broker of the ceasefire—to intervene. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem also accused Israel of altering markings that define areas it still occupies, effectively controlling over 50% of Gaza, despite ceasefire maps.
On the Ground in Gaza:
Residents in Gaza City’s Zeitoun suburb sifted through rubble after a building collapse killed at least 10 people on Wednesday. “They say there is a ceasefire, but I doubt this… missiles struck the displaced, poor citizens. What can we do?” said local resident Akram Iswair.
The October 10 truce has eased the conflict, enabling thousands to return to Gaza’s ruins, and Israel has partially withdrawn troops while aid flows have increased. However, violence persists: Palestinian authorities report 312 deaths from Israeli strikes since the truce, while Israel says three soldiers have been killed.
Background:
The two-year Gaza war began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people in southern Israel and took 251 hostages. Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health officials.
Under the truce, Hamas released 20 living hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, while Israel has returned 330 bodies of Palestinians. Hamas is also transferring remains of dead hostages in return for the bodies of 360 Palestinian militants killed in the conflict.
