Cairo, Egypt: Israeli airstrikes killed at least 43 Palestinians across Gaza on Thursday, with the most devastating attack hitting a tent encampment in the Al-Mawasi district. The airstrike killed 11 individuals, including women and children, who were seeking refuge in the designated humanitarian zone, medics reported.

The attack on Al-Mawasi is one of several that hit various parts of Gaza, marking yet another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza's Hamas-led government, now entering its 15th month.

Among those killed in the airstrikes were Mahmoud Salah, the director general of Gaza's police department, and his aide, Hussam Shahwan, who were both targeted in the Al-Mawasi district. According to Gaza's interior ministry, the strike was an intentional assassination by Israeli forces.

The Israeli military, however, claimed that its operation was based on intelligence suggesting that Hamas militants, including Shahwan, were operating in the area. The strike in Al-Mawasi was one of several attacks throughout Gaza, with other fatalities occurring in Khan Younis, Jabalia refugee camp, Shati camp, and Maghazi camp.

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), condemned the attack, calling it a stark reminder that no area in Gaza is truly safe. "As the year begins, we got reports of yet another attack on Al-Mawasi with dozens of people killed, another reminder that there is no humanitarian zone let alone a safe zone," Lazzarini said.

Israel's military spokesperson defended the airstrikes, stating that the operations followed international law and that efforts were made to minimize civilian harm. However, these latest deaths underscore the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the widespread devastation in Gaza, leaving the situation increasingly dire for its civilian population.
