Two people were killed on Thursday in an Israeli drone strike targeting a minibus in the Hermel district of eastern Lebanon, Lebanese state media reported. The incident occurred on the Hosh al-Sayyed Ali road, highlighting ongoing violations of the ceasefire that has nominally been in place since November 2024.
According to Israel, the strike targeted a “terrorist operative” in the al-Nasiriyah area, according to military spokesperson Avichay Adraee. The attack came hours after another drone strike in southern Lebanon’s Tyre district injured a passerby.
Despite the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah last year, Israel has conducted near-daily strikes across Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure. Data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) shows nearly 1,600 strikes in Lebanon from January to late November, resulting in over 300 deaths, including approximately 127 civilians, according to UN figures.
Hezbollah has consistently rejected disarmament demands, asserting that its weapons are vital for defending Lebanon against Israeli attacks. The group urged the Lebanese government to resist Israeli pressure, emphasizing the protection of sovereignty and national dignity.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s government claims progress toward disarming Hezbollah in the south of the Litani River before the year-end deadline. Under the ceasefire, Israeli forces were also expected to withdraw from southern Lebanon in January 2025 but maintain positions at five border outposts. More than 64,000 people, mostly from southern Lebanon, remain displaced due to the conflict.
The ongoing Israeli strikes occur alongside US-mediated diplomatic talks between Israeli and Lebanese delegations, including a recent closed-door meeting in the southern town of Naqoura. The Lebanese presidency has emphasized that the return of displaced civilians is essential for the broader implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
