Pope Leo Laments Gaza Crisis in Christmas Sermon, Urges Global Compassion

Pope Leo delivered a poignant message on Thursday during his first Christmas sermon, drawing attention to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. In an unusually direct appeal during the solemn service at St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pope decried the plight of Palestinians, highlighting the suffering of civilians amid ongoing conflict.

“How, then, can we not think of the tents in Gaza, exposed for weeks to rain, wind and cold?” he asked, referencing the fragile conditions faced by displaced Palestinians. Nearly the entire population of Gaza remains homeless, with humanitarian agencies warning that aid access is insufficient despite the October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Pope Leo, the first US pontiff, contrasted the nativity story of Jesus being born in a stable with the realities faced by displaced populations today. “Fragile is the flesh of defenseless populations, tried by so many wars, ongoing or concluded, leaving behind rubble and open wounds,” he said.

He also expressed concern for young people forced into armed conflict, describing their experiences on the front lines as a tragic reflection of the senselessness of war. “Fragile are the minds and lives of young people forced to take up arms… and the falsehoods that fill the pompous speeches of those who send them to their deaths,” he added.

While Pope Leo is generally known for a more diplomatic approach than his predecessor, he has repeatedly spoken out in recent weeks about the Palestinian situation, advocating for a lasting solution that includes a recognized Palestinian state.

The Christmas sermon included broader reflections on global suffering, particularly for the homeless and victims of ongoing conflicts worldwide. Later on Thursday, Pope Leo will deliver the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” message and blessing, which customarily addresses global peace, humanitarian crises, and international conflict.
