At least 12 medical workers were killed in an Israeli air strike on a health centre in southern Lebanon, according to the country’s Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, as hostilities intensified amid the wider regional conflict involving Israel and Iran.

The attack took place late Friday in the village of Burj Qalaouiyah in the Bint Jbeil District. Officials said the strike hit a health centre where doctors, paramedics and nurses were on duty, resulting in heavy casualties among medical staff.

The Lebanese Health Ministry condemned the attack, describing it as a direct strike on the healthcare sector. The ministry said the victims included doctors, paramedics and nurses who were providing medical services at the facility.

Growing Toll on Medical Workers

According to Lebanese authorities, the attack follows another strike earlier the same day on a paramedic centre in the southern village of Souaneh, which killed two paramedics and injured five others.

Since the resurgence of hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah on March 2, hundreds of people have been killed across Lebanon.

Officials report that at least 773 people have died in the country since the latest round of fighting began. Among the victims are 18 paramedics, highlighting the growing impact of the conflict on healthcare workers.

Reporting from Beirut, journalist Heidi Pett said rescue teams were still searching through the rubble for missing victims, suggesting that the death toll could rise.

Separate Israeli air raids also targeted areas in southern Lebanon, including Taamir Haret Saida, where at least four people were killed, according to the National News Agency of Lebanon.

Hezbollah Escalates Attacks

In response to the strikes, Hezbollah said it carried out several military operations against Israeli forces.

The group claimed it launched suicide drones targeting Israeli troops in the northern Israeli town of Ya’ara. It also reported rocket attacks on Israeli soldiers in the southern Lebanese town of Kfar Kila and the city of Khiam.

According to Hezbollah, these attacks were part of a broader escalation in response to Israeli air strikes in Lebanon.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem warned that the group is prepared for a prolonged conflict.

“This is an existential battle, not a limited or simple battle,” Qassem said in remarks late Friday.

International Calls for Ceasefire

Amid rising tensions, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, offered to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.

In a statement posted on social media, Macron said the Lebanese leadership was open to direct discussions with Israel and urged both sides to seize the opportunity for negotiations.

He called on Israel to halt its military offensive and urged Hezbollah to stop its attacks, warning that the situation risks pushing Lebanon further into instability.

“Everything must be done to stop Lebanon from descending into chaos,” Macron said.

Iranian Missile Attacks on Israel

Meanwhile, tensions continued to rise as Iran carried out retaliatory missile and rocket attacks against Israel.

According to reports from Israeli media, including Channel 12 Israel, several rockets struck the Upper Galilee region in northern Israel early Saturday.

Sirens were triggered across multiple towns including Manara, Margaliot, Kfar Giladi, Misgav Am, Tel Hai, Metula and Kfar Yuval.

Israel’s public broadcaster Kan shared images showing damaged vehicles following the attacks.

Journalist Rory Challands, reporting from Amman, said some of the damage was linked to Iranian “cluster missiles”.

“These weapons disperse multiple submunitions over a large area, each carrying explosives,” Challands explained, adding that the bomblets can cause widespread destruction if they are not intercepted by air defence systems.

Regional Conflict Intensifies

The latest violence comes as the broader conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran continues to escalate across the Middle East.

Analysts warn that the growing number of cross-border attacks involving Israel, Hezbollah and Iran risks expanding the conflict further, potentially destabilizing the wider region.
