Israeli Strikes on Gaza Kill 61 in 48 Hours Amid Failed Ceasefire Efforts

Israeli military strikes across the Gaza Strip have killed at least 61 people over the past 48 hours, according to local medics. The airstrikes are part of an ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas-led militants that has persisted for eleven months.

The violence continues despite numerous diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire and address the complex issues of hostages and detainees. The Israeli military reported targeting Hamas command centers, while Hamas and other Palestinian groups have denied these allegations, blaming Israeli airstrikes for civilian casualties.

One of the deadliest strikes hit the Halima al-Sa'diyya school compound in the Jabalia refugee camp, killing at least eight and wounding 15 others. Another strike on a house in Gaza City claimed five lives, while a subsequent attack on the Amr Ibn Ala'as school resulted in four deaths and 25 injuries. The schools had been converted into shelters for displaced families.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in severe humanitarian impacts, with more than 40,900 Palestinians killed and nearly 2.3 million displaced since the violence erupted following a Hamas attack on October 7. The assault by Hamas led to the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the capture of approximately 250 hostages.

Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have thus far failed. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and CIA Director William Burns are working on a new proposal, but significant gaps remain between the parties. Hamas has criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for introducing new conditions, while Netanyahu accuses Hamas of making unacceptable demands.

Amid the conflict, the United Nations has continued its polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, reaching over half of the targeted 640,000 children in the southern and central areas. This campaign is vital following a recent polio outbreak, with further vaccination rounds planned.
