JUI Seeks 60-Day Extension for Intra-Party Elections; Election Commission Reserves Decision

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) requested a 60-day extension to complete its intra-party elections. A three-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, heard the case at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The party's legal counsel explained that intra-party elections have been underway at the provincial level and are yet to take place at the federal level. He attributed delays to the upcoming general elections and sought more time to conclude the process.

The lawyer assured the court that the elections would be completed within the requested 60-day period, noting that the party is also working on a constitutional amendment. However, Chief Election Commissioner Raja raised concerns, stating that the intra-party election process should not be affected by any constitutional amendments. He warned that failure to hold the elections on time could lead to the de-notification of the party’s election symbol and the party itself.

After hearing the arguments, the Election Commission reserved its decision on the matter, leaving the party awaiting a final verdict.
