The Judicial Commission has approved the name of Justice Baqar Najafi of the Lahore High Court for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The commission met under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan, where several nominations were reviewed for filling vacancies in the country’s apex court.
According to sources, the nomination of Justice Najafi was approved through a majority vote. Notably, members from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Senator Ali Zafar, supported Justice Najafi’s elevation.
While Justice Najafi’s name was approved, the commission also gave a unanimous endorsement to its adverse opinion regarding both Justice Shujaat Ali Khan and Justice Baqar Najafi. The adverse opinion, which typically reflects reservations or concerns regarding the candidates, was officially recorded despite the final approval of Najafi’s nomination.
The elevation of judges to the Supreme Court remains a sensitive and politically charged issue in Pakistan, as it shapes the composition and future decisions of the highest judicial authority in the country.
Justice Baqar Najafi has been a senior judge at the Lahore High Court and has presided over several high-profile cases. His elevation comes at a time when the judiciary is under intense public and political scrutiny, and appointments to the apex court are closely watched for their broader legal and constitutional implications.
The final appointment will now move forward to the next constitutional stage, where the President of Pakistan is expected to formally confirm the nomination.
