LEGAL

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has rejected the request from Imran Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, to issue a written order for the lawyer to meet the PTI founder. The case pertains to the remand of Imran Khan in connection with the May 9 cases, with the court hearing the appeal of Khan’s detention.
The Court’s Stance
The three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, heard the appeal during which both Imran Khan’s lawyer Salman Safdar and Special Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi appeared before the court.
Special Prosecutor Naqvi argued that Imran Khan had yet to undergo a polygraph and voice matching test. He added that physical remand was necessary for conducting these tests, but the PTI founder had not been cooperating with the authorities.
However, Imran Khan's lawyer, Salman Safdar, requested that the Supreme Court issue special instructions to meet his client, as Khan is facing more than 300 cases. Safdar proposed that if such instructions were granted, he would be able to meet the PTI founder.
Chief Justice’s Response
In response to the request, Chief Justice Afridi firmly stated that the court would not issue a written order for the lawyer to meet Imran Khan. The Chief Justice emphasized that the lawyer was free to meet the PTI leader without a court order, and there was no need for a formal directive.
“You meet without a court order, the meeting will take place,” the Chief Justice remarked.
Next Steps
The court then adjourned the hearing of the case, and the next hearing is scheduled for April 23, 2025. The court's decision highlights the ongoing legal proceedings concerning the PTI leader and the measures to be taken in connection with the May 9 cases.
