Kamala Harris Defends Policy Shifts and Core Values in First Major TV Interview

US Vice President Kamala Harris, joined by her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, tackled a range of pressing issues including the economy, immigration, and the Gaza conflict.

During the interview with CNN's Dana Bash, Harris defended her evolving stances on key issues, notably fracking and illegal migration. She assured viewers that while her positions have adapted, her core values remain steadfast. “The most important aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is that my values have not changed,” Harris emphasized.

Harris, 59, a Democratic presidential candidate, clarified her stance on fracking, particularly significant in Pennsylvania, a critical battleground state. “As president, I will not ban fracking,” she stated firmly. On immigration, she acknowledged the challenges of irregular border crossings and pledged to enforce existing laws, stating that “there should be consequences” for those entering the country illegally.

In her foreign policy remarks, Harris called for a cease-fire and hostage release deal in Gaza, condemning the loss of innocent Palestinian lives. However, she reaffirmed support for Israel’s right to self-defense and maintained the current US policy of supplying arms to Israel.

Harris also addressed criticisms from former President Donald Trump, dismissing his comments about her racial identity as part of a "tired playbook." She asserted that Americans are ready to "turn the page" from the divisive rhetoric of the past decade.

DW's Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl noted that while the interview did not significantly alter Harris’s standing, it was a modest success given her past interview challenges. Pohl highlighted that the upcoming debate with Donald Trump on September 10th will likely have a more substantial impact.
