A sessions court in Karachi has sentenced four individuals, including an underage boy, to 14 years in prison after finding them guilty of possessing over 20kg of charas.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge (West), Aurangzeb Shah, announced the verdict on Monday, convicting car driver Muhammad Saleem and three passengers—Sikandar, Syed Wali, and Muhammad Ahmed Khan—of drug possession. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) recovered the narcotics during a snap check near Musharraf Colony under the jurisdiction of the Mauripur police station.
The court, while delivering the judgment, stated:
"Upon a thorough examination of the case as a whole, with particular emphasis on the astute trafficking of the charas by the accused persons, it becomes unmistakably clear that the matter under scrutiny has been decisively proven against them."
In addition to the 14-year sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs400,000 on each convict. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six-month imprisonment.
Drug Bust by SIU
According to state prosecutor Saleem Abbas Soomro, the SIU team was on routine patrol on June 16, 2024, when they stopped a suspicious car near TCS School in Musharraf Colony. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found over 20kg of charas.
During the trial, the defense counsel argued that the prosecution's witnesses were all police officials, questioning the credibility of their testimonies. However, the court dismissed this argument, stating:
"Police witnesses hold the same credibility as private witnesses. Their testimony cannot be disregarded simply because they are law enforcement officers."
The court further noted that the accused failed to provide any evidence supporting their innocence. They also could not explain why law enforcement would falsely implicate them with such a large quantity of narcotics.
A case was registered against the convicts under Section 6/9 (1) 3 (D) of the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2022.
