Key Bridge Blown Up in North Waziristan, Land Links Cut Off

An important bridge over the Kurram River in Shewa tehsil of North Waziristan was completely destroyed on Wednesday after unknown attackers detonated explosives, severing land connections with Miranshah, Bannu and other adjoining areas.

According to local sources, the attackers planted a large quantity of explosives beneath the bridge during the early morning hours. The powerful blast was heard miles away, spreading fear and panic among residents of the area.

Following the explosion, police and security forces rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities said a detailed report has been forwarded to senior officials, while planning for reconstruction and alternative routes is underway.

The destroyed bridge was a vital communication link, frequently used by civilians, including patients, students, traders and government employees. Its collapse has caused severe hardships, disrupting access to healthcare facilities, supply of essential goods and routine commercial activities. Residents are now forced to take longer and more difficult alternative routes.

Local sources said security forces’ convoys occasionally used the route, raising concerns that the attack may have been aimed at destabilising the region and undermining peace efforts. However, official sources clarified that the bridge was primarily used for civilian movement and relief operations.

Tribal elder Malik Islam Khan, along with other local elders, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous and cowardly act”. They said such actions only harm innocent civilians already suffering due to years of insecurity and underdevelopment, and demanded strict action against those responsible.

Local political leader Abdullah Khan also expressed serious concern, stating that the people of North Waziristan had made immense sacrifices for peace, and such attacks were attempts to sabotage stability in the region. He urged the government to enhance security and ensure protection of critical infrastructure.

The incident comes amid a rising trend of attacks on infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier this month, terrorists blew up a link bridge in Bannu’s Mamandkhel area, while North Waziristan’s Mir Ali tehsil recently witnessed attacks on government schools. Similar attempts to target bridges were also reported in Bannu in November.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
