Khawaja Asif Alleges Conspiracy to Restore PTI Founder, Blames Faiz Hameed

Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Saturday alleged that conspiratorial elements are still attempting to bring back the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, claiming that former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed played a central role in engineering his rise to power and subsequent political developments.

Speaking to the media in Sialkot, Khawaja Asif said that Faiz Hameed was “in charge of the PTI founder project” and strengthened Imran Khan’s politics during his tenure as Corps Commander Peshawar. He alleged that the PTI founder was brought to power through election rigging under Faiz Hameed’s supervision, with other individuals also contributing to the project.

The defence minister claimed that during his four-year tenure, the PTI founder “played with the country,” adding that both Imran Khan and Faiz Hameed were responsible for the political instability of that period. He alleged that Parliament was effectively turned into a subsidiary of the intelligence agency, and that the so-called project began to unravel over time.

Referring to the events of May 9, Khawaja Asif alleged that the violence was planned for the benefit of the PTI founder and that Faiz Hameed was behind the planning. He claimed that political opponents were jailed under Faiz Hameed’s influence and accused him of orchestrating multiple conspiracies that damaged the country.

“The destruction on May 9 was also the fault of Faiz Hameed and the founder of PTI,” he said, adding that if their alleged nexus had continued, the country could have suffered even greater damage. He termed their actions as hostility towards Pakistan and said those responsible must be fully identified and held accountable.

Khawaja Asif further stated that accountability should extend to individuals hiding within various institutions, including the bureaucracy. He noted that the army itself initiated proceedings against Faiz Hameed, resulting in his trial and conviction within 15 months.

Reiterating his stance, the defence minister said the May 9 violence was a “joint venture” and claimed that even now, conspirators were attempting to bring the PTI founder back into power. He condemned the desecration of military monuments and memorials of martyrs on May 9, contrasting it with what he described as the army’s role in restoring national pride through Operation Banyan Marsus.

He questioned what could have happened had the alleged plan succeeded, saying Pakistan created a “new history” in May, which he described as a source of pride. He warned that failure to bring those responsible to justice would not be in the country’s interest.

Khawaja Asif acknowledged that Faiz Hameed has the right to appeal against his sentence, while contrasting this with what he described as the lack of similar legal relief for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. He credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif with steering the country out of a difficult situation, adding that the army leadership supported the civilian government during this period.

He also claimed that more cases were still pending against Faiz Hameed, including those related to May 9. He said individuals in politics who were allegedly part of past conspiracies should also face accountability. Recalling his own experience, Khawaja Asif alleged that NAB was used against political opponents, saying he was pressured to give a statement against Nawaz Sharif and was imprisoned after refusing to comply.
