KP Govt Earns Rs 25 Crore from Markhor Trophy Hunting Permits

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has earned a significant Rs 25 crore from the sale of four permits for Markhor trophy hunting, according to the KP Wildlife Department. The most lucrative bids were for two hunts in Toshi 1 and Toshi 2, fetching an impressive Rs 15 crore.

The wildlife department reports that this year’s bids for trophy hunting have reached unprecedented levels. The permit for Markhor hunting in Kohistan was sold for Rs 5 crore 37 lakh, while the permit for Chitral Gharat earned Rs 5 crore 28 lakh.

Under the trophy hunting program, 80% of the revenue generated will be distributed to the local communities in the areas where the hunts take place. This ensures that the economic benefits of wildlife conservation and sustainable hunting practices are shared with the people, providing them with incentives to protect and preserve their natural environment.

Markhor, Pakistan’s national animal, is a rare and protected species found in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. The KP Wildlife Department's trophy hunting program allows for a limited number of hunts each year, regulated under strict guidelines to ensure the population of the species remains stable and benefits local conservation efforts.

This initiative not only helps in the preservation of Markhor populations but also contributes to the economic welfare of the region’s inhabitants, making wildlife conservation a sustainable and beneficial practice for all involved.
