KP Opposition Eyes Joint Strategy to Challenge PTI in Senate Elections

Opposition parties in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly have initiated discussions on forming a united front to challenge the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the upcoming Senate elections scheduled for July 21, sources confirmed on Tuesday.

According to insiders, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are engaged in strategic consultations to support each other’s candidates in a bid to dilute PTI’s dominance in the province.

Sources revealed a tentative power-sharing formula under discussion:

·       Technocrat Seat: PML-N and PPP to back JUI-F’s Dilawar Khan

·       Women’s Seat: JUI-F and PML-N to support PPP’s Rubina Khalid

·       General Seat: PPP and JUI-F to vote for PML-N’s Niaz Ahmed Khan, son of senior party leader Amir Muqam

While no official announcement has been made yet, party sources suggest a formal declaration of this alliance could come within the next two days, potentially shifting the dynamics of the tightly contested Senate race.

Polling will be held on 11 vacant Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 16 candidates currently in the running. Given PTI’s numerical advantage in the provincial assembly, a coordinated opposition effort is seen as essential to secure any seats.

Analysts note that despite their reduced presence in the KP Assembly, the combined strength of PML-N, PPP, and JUI-F—if effectively mobilized—could help secure at least a few crucial seats and send a symbolic message of resistance to the ruling party.

The outcome of this potential alliance could not only impact the Senate's composition but also set the tone for future electoral cooperation among opposition forces ahead of upcoming by-elections and local government contests.
