The Kremlin clarified on Tuesday that it has received no official statements from India regarding the cessation of Russian oil imports, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a trade agreement with New Delhi.
Trump announced the deal on Monday, highlighting a reduction of US tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% in exchange for India halting purchases of Russian crude and lowering trade barriers.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was “carefully analysing” Trump’s remarks. When asked if India had decided to stop buying Russian oil, Peskov replied: “So far, we have not heard any statements from Delhi on this issue.”
He added that while Russia respects US-India relations, it remains equally committed to developing its strategic partnership with India, describing it as “the most important thing for us” and reaffirming intentions to further strengthen bilateral ties.
India has emerged as the top buyer of discounted Russian seaborne crude since Moscow launched its war in Ukraine in 2022. This increase in imports has drawn international attention, as Western nations imposed sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector to limit its revenues and constrain funding for the conflict.
The US-India trade deal is intended to boost bilateral trade and exports, but questions remain over India’s oil imports from Russia, with the Kremlin underscoring that no official communications have been received to confirm such a change. Analysts say any shift away from Russian crude could have significant implications for India’s energy strategy and global oil markets.
