Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered the country’s military leaders to respond after a recent surge of Russian attacks targeting railway infrastructure and logistics routes, vital for civilian and military transport.
The announcement on Monday follows a series of Russian strikes, including a deadly attack last week on a train in eastern Kharkiv, which killed five people in a railway car. Despite almost four years of war, Ukraine has largely managed to keep its nationwide rail network operational. Russian forces have focused on capturing key train hubs such as Kupiansk and Pokrovsk in the east.
“The Russian army remains focused on terror against our logistics – primarily railway infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said in a social media post. “There were strikes in the Dnipro region and in Zaporizhzhia, specifically targeting railway facilities.”
State railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia warned that several eastern routes are becoming increasingly “high risk” and urged passengers to use buses instead. In the Sumy region, railway officials said trains would be stopped near bomb shelters if drones are detected.
The attacks come amid ongoing civilian suffering, including a recent missile strike that killed 12 miners traveling in a bus. Russian bombardments are also damaging Ukraine’s power grid, leaving residents without heating, electricity, or water during harsh winter conditions.
Meanwhile, US-brokered talks aimed at ending the war are scheduled to resume this week in Abu Dhabi after a brief postponement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the negotiations “very complex,” citing both progress and continued disagreements on territorial disputes. Moscow insists on retaining Ukrainian territory it occupies and demands additional regions, while Ukraine has rejected any concession that could embolden further Russian aggression.
Since Russia’s failed lightning offensive in 2022, which aimed to topple Kyiv, the conflict has devolved into a grinding war of attrition with high human and infrastructural costs. Zelenskyy’s latest order underscores Ukraine’s commitment to defending its territory and maintaining essential logistics amid escalating Russian attacks.
