Lahore Police Arrest TikToker for False Claim in Punjab College Rape Case

Lahore’s Organised Crime Unit (OCU) arrested TikToker Sara Khan on Thursday for allegedly making a false claim of being the mother of the alleged rape victim in the Punjab College case. Police accused Khan of inciting public sentiment against the authorities, urging people to mobilize for street demonstrations, which raised concerns over public safety.

The arrest followed a viral TikTok video posted by Khan, in which she claimed her daughter was the victim of the alleged assault. This video rapidly gained traction on social media, reigniting controversy and provoking student protests. The OCU Model Town police, acting on a complaint from Gulberg police sub-inspector Mohammad Imran, initiated action under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 and additional charges against Khan.

DIG Imran Kishwar confirmed that a special police team arrested Khan when she appeared at the Lahore High Court seeking bail in an unrelated case filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)’s cyber crime wing. The video, in which Khan asserted that a female student of Punjab College had been sexually assaulted, was deemed “alarming” and unfounded following a preliminary police investigation. Khan’s statements led to her identification as a resident of Karachi, with a permanent address in Multan.

The Punjab government, recognizing the sensitivity of the case and the risk of public disorder, formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to carry out a thorough probe. The JIT, led by Model Town OCU SP Aftab Phularwan, also includes DSP Faisal Shareef, woman inspector Fiza, and representatives from the Intelligence Bureau and FIA.

DIG Kishwar emphasized the potential harm caused by spreading unverified information, which he said can damage reputations and mislead the public. Authorities hope the investigation will deter the spread of misinformation and caution against its dangers.

Sara Khan remains in JIT custody as the team conducts further investigations. This incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of misinformation in cases with serious social implications and the importance of verifying claims before dissemination.
