The Lahore High Court (LHC) has conditionally suspended a trial court’s decision that directed singer Meesha Shafi to pay Rs5 million in damages to fellow artist Ali Zafar in a long-running defamation case.
According to court proceedings, the bench allowed relief to Meesha Shafi but imposed strict conditions. She has been directed to deposit Rs2.5 million in cash with the court and submit surety bonds for the remaining Rs2.5 million.
The original ruling by a sessions court had ordered Meesha Shafi to pay damages in a defamation suit filed by Ali Zafar, who had accused her of making false allegations of sexual harassment that harmed his reputation.
During the hearing, Meesha Shafi’s legal team argued that the trial court had erred in its judgment and failed to properly assess both facts and legal grounds. They also maintained that related harassment proceedings are still pending in higher courts, and therefore the defamation ruling should be reconsidered.
The LHC’s decision does not finalize the case but temporarily suspends enforcement of the damages order while the appeal is heard further. The case remains part of a wider legal battle between the two artists that has been ongoing for several years.
