A major development has emerged in the high-profile murder case of Tipu Truck Wala’s son, Amir Balaj Tipu, as the main accused Khawaja Tafi alias Tefi Butt has been arrested in Dubai with the assistance of Interpol, police confirmed on Saturday.
According to the Counter Crime Department (CCD), Tefi Butt, who had been declared a proclaimed offender, was taken into custody late Friday night in Dubai. Efforts are currently underway to transfer him to Pakistan for trial.
Additional IG CCD Sohail Zafar Chatha has also written to Lahore’s Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), seeking approval to transfer the investigation of the case from the Lahore Police Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to the CCD.
Two accused were named in the murder case — Khawaja Tefi alias Tefi Butt and Khawaja Aqeel alias Gogi Butt. While Gogi Butt is currently out on bail, Tefi Butt had been evading arrest.
The case stems from the tragic incident on February 18, 2024, when Amir Balaj Tipu was fatally shot during a wedding ceremony near Thokar Niaz Baig, where he had gone to attend the marriage of former DSP Akbar Iqbal Bala’s son.
According to police, armed assailants opened fire at the gathering, killing Amir Balaj and injuring three others. In the exchange of fire, one of the attackers was also killed on the spot by security guards.
In August 2024, the case’s main named accused, Ahsan Shah, was killed in an alleged police encounter when his accomplices attacked security forces during his transport for identification.
A year later, in September 2025, a JIT report concluded that the murder was allegedly masterminded by Khawaja Aqeel alias Gogi Butt, who maintained constant communication with Tefi Butt before the killing. Sources have indicated that the JIT is now preparing to petition the court to cancel Gogi Butt’s bail in the upcoming hearing.
The arrest of Tefi Butt marks a critical step forward in the case, which has drawn public attention due to its violent nature and the involvement of prominent local figures. Authorities say his repatriation and trial will be key to bringing closure to the high-profile case.
