Manhunt Underway After Suspected Militant Attack Kills Nine Hindu Pilgrims in Kashmir

Indian soldiers have initiated a manhunt following a suspected militant attack in India-controlled Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of at least nine Hindu pilgrims. The attack occurred on Sunday as the bus carrying the pilgrims to the famous Hindu temple Mata Vaishno Devi in the Reasi district fell into a deep gorge.

According to senior administrative officer Vishesh Mahajan, militants ambushed the bus and fired indiscriminately, causing it to plunge into the gorge. Mohita Sharma, district police chief of Reasi, confirmed that nine pilgrims were killed and 33 others injured in the attack, with some victims sustaining bullet wounds.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, police officer Mohita Sharma attributed it to militants opposed to India's rule in Kashmir. The wounded pilgrims have been hospitalized, and an investigation to apprehend the attackers is underway.

The incident occurred amidst Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third oath ceremony, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition. Rahul Gandhi, an opposition leader, condemned the attack, highlighting the precarious security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Police chief RR Swain noted a decrease in the number of local militants in the region but emphasized the continued presence of foreign militants. Kashmir remains volatile as rebel groups persist in their struggle for independence or union with Pakistan.

The conflict in Kashmir has resulted in casualties among civilians, rebels, and government personnel, underscoring the longstanding tensions between India and Pakistan over the disputed territory.
