Marjorie Taylor Greene Announces Congressional Resignation Amid Rift with Trump

Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent figure in the MAGA movement and longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, announced on Friday that she will resign from Congress, effective January 5, 2026.

Greene, 51, representing Georgia, cited a combination of political pressure and personal concerns in her resignation. Posting on social media, she said, “Loyalty should be a two-way street”, and criticized how Congress had been sidelined under the Trump administration. She added that she had always represented the “common American man and woman,” which led to her being “despised in Washington, DC.”

Falling Out with Trump

Greene’s resignation follows a public falling out with Trump, who earlier this month withdrew his support for her, calling her “‘Wacky’ Marjorie” and later describing her as a “lightweight” and “traitor” to the Republican Party.

One key point of tension was Greene’s advocacy for releasing government files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump had previously dismissed the issue as a “Democrat hoax,” though he later signed a bill to release the files under pressure from Congress. Greene condemned the treatment she received for speaking out, saying, “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor.”

Other Controversies

This year, Greene became the first Republican lawmaker to describe Israel’s assault on Gaza as genocide, further straining her relationship with party leadership and the MAGA base. She also cited threats to herself, her supporters, and her family as reasons for stepping down.

President Trump reacted to the news, calling it “great news for the country”.

Greene’s resignation, coming ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, highlights deep divisions within the MAGA movement and growing friction between Trump and some of his former allies. It also reflects the political pressures on far-right lawmakers navigating both internal party conflicts and broader national controversies.
