Maulana Fazlur Rehman Calls for Fresh Elections, Criticizes 27th Amendment

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday stated that neither the 2018 nor 2024 general elections were constitutional, urging for fresh elections to restore democratic legitimacy in Pakistan.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Sindh Governor, Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized the need for the supremacy of the constitution, respect for parliament, and strengthening of the country’s defense forces. He also expressed concern over Pakistan’s declining rankings in judiciary and trade.

The JUI-F leader criticized the 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it unilateral and controversial, in contrast to the 26th Amendment, which was made by consensus. He said the forced two-thirds majority used to pass the 27th Amendment undermines public trust in democratic processes.

On the issue of Afghan refugees, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said it is a bilateral matter between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He urged for a fair policy to repatriate refugees, noting that Afghanistan has historically not been a close friend to Pakistan and stressing that Pakistan has invested in their education and skills over 40 years.

He also spoke in favor of religious education, stating that madrassas are important institutions and should be respected. He warned against Western agendas aimed at abolishing religious studies and highlighted the country’s achievements in religious scholarship.

The JUI-F chief further praised the societal tradition of mutual respect across political ideologies and expressed gratitude for being awarded an honorary PhD, though he said he prefers to continue being addressed as “Maulana.”
