Modi Likely to Miss G7 Summit for First Time in 6 Years

For the first time in six years, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to miss the upcoming G7 summit, scheduled to be held in Canada from June 15 to 17, 2025.

According to reports from Indian media, Prime Minister Modi has not yet received a formal invitation from the Canadian government to attend the meeting. Sources in India also suggest that even if an invitation is extended, Modi is unlikely to participate.

This decision comes amid concerns in New Delhi over whether the new Canadian government will adequately address India’s worries about the activities of the Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh state and has been a contentious issue between the two nations.

A spokesperson for the Canadian G7 summit organizers declined to confirm whether Modi will be invited or not, maintaining a neutral stance on the matter.

Modi’s absence would mark a significant shift in India’s engagement with the G7, given his consistent participation in the previous six summits. It also underscores growing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over internal security and diaspora-related issues.

The summit is expected to focus on global economic recovery, climate change, and geopolitical stability, making the absence of one of the world’s largest democracies notable.
