Mohsin Naqvi Accuses PTI of Politicising Imran Khan’s Medical Treatment

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has accused the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of politicising the medical treatment of party founder Imran Khan, claiming that while senior leaders were on board regarding his care, internal disagreements prevented consensus.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, the minister said that propaganda had been spread about Imran Khan’s eye condition. He maintained that any prisoner, including the former premier, would be provided facilities strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

‘Best Possible Treatment’

Naqvi stated that he remained in constant contact with PTI leadership regarding the former prime minister’s eye treatment. According to him, the government asked PTI to nominate a renowned eye specialist for consultation. However, the party demanded that Imran Khan be shifted to a hospital for a week — a proposal the government declined unless recommended by doctors.

He said the authorities selected leading government and private specialists for the examination and invited PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan to personally review the availability of doctors. Naqvi claimed he waited for an hour for Barrister Gohar, who later conveyed that he would not be able to attend after consulting party leadership.

The minister added that doctors examined Imran Khan at 3:30pm and remained for approximately an hour and a half. He further stated that the government again contacted Barrister Gohar and invited him, along with the Leaders of the Opposition in the National Assembly and Senate, to review the medical arrangements at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

According to Naqvi, opposition leaders visited PIMS, met doctors for nearly two hours, and consulted their own medical experts by phone. He claimed that PTI’s doctors expressed satisfaction with the treatment, saying it matched what they themselves would have recommended.

Allegations Against Aleema Khan

The interior minister alleged that although senior PTI leaders appeared satisfied, Aleema Khan repeatedly vetoed proposals, arguing that agreeing to the government’s plan would weaken their political stance.

Naqvi said that doctors had recommended an eye injection for Imran Khan, which was administered as a precautionary measure at a hospital. He insisted that providing medical treatment to prisoners was the government’s duty but added that there were many other inmates in the country requiring similar care.

He also questioned the need for protests and road blockades, asking why public inconvenience was being caused if medical treatment was already underway and documented.

Red Zone and Road Closures

Naqvi further alleged that attempts were made to create unrest in Islamabad’s Red Zone but said authorities handled the situation peacefully. He criticised what he described as efforts to mislead the public.

Referring to the recent order of the Peshawar High Court directing authorities to reopen roads in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Naqvi said the government would ensure implementation of the court’s decision.

He concluded by stating that the government did not wish to politicise the issue of medical treatment and that the medical report released recently contained all relevant details, though some aspects were not appropriate to disclose publicly at this time.

The remarks come amid heightened political tensions and ongoing protests linked to concerns over Imran Khan’s health and incarceration conditions.
