Monsoon Rains Leave Trail of Death and Destruction Across Pakistan

A fresh and intense spell of monsoon rains has unleashed widespread devastation across Pakistan, resulting in multiple casualties and life-threatening incidents in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and other regions.

The heavy downpours, ongoing for the past 24 hours, have triggered flash floods, landslides, and urban inundation, leaving roads submerged and rescue operations underway in several parts of the country.

Tragedy Strikes in Hassan Abdal

One of the most heart-wrenching incidents occurred in Hassan Abdal, where a car returning from a wedding was swept away by floodwaters. The vehicle carried ten passengers, of whom five were rescued alive, while four women died and a four-year-old child remains missing. Rescue 1122 teams continue to search for the missing child.

Children Among the Victims

In Kharian, four children tragically drowned in rainwater, while in Rawalpindi, a 10-year-old boy was swept away in a drainage canal. Abbottabad also witnessed sorrow as two young girls died in a roof collapse caused by heavy rainfall.

Foreign Tourist Missing in Gilgit

A foreign tourist went missing following a landslide in Gilgit, sparking a search operation in the mountainous region. Meanwhile, Kaghan Highway, closed due to the landslide, was reopened after 16 hours of obstruction.

Cities Submerged, Rivers Swell

In cities like Sialkot, Gujrat, Swat, Mardan, Muzaffarabad, and Islamabad, torrential rains turned roads into virtual rivers, overwhelming drainage systems and causing gridlock. Low-lying areas in Haripur are completely submerged, while rivers and canals in Kalabagh and Shakargarh overflowed their banks.

In Sindh, moderate flooding has been reported at Guddu Barrage, where the Indus River’s flow has increased by 8,000 cusecs over the last 24 hours. As a precaution, ferry services in Sukkur have been suspended.

More Rain Ahead

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, more rain is forecast over the next 48 hours. Authorities have been placed on high alert, and disaster response teams have been mobilized across the most vulnerable regions.

The ongoing monsoon spell continues to expose vulnerabilities in Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and urban drainage infrastructure. With the forecast indicating further rainfall, the risk of additional casualties and damage remains high.

Government & Rescue Response

NDMA and provincial authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with emergency advisories. Relief and evacuation efforts are expected to ramp up in the coming days as the situation develops.
