TikTok Launches Flood Safety Guide in Partnership with NDMA

As monsoon rains sweep across Pakistan from late June through September, bringing with them the risk of flash floods and landslides—especially in the northern and western regions—TikTok has taken a significant step toward public safety by launching a flood-related safety guide for Pakistani users.

According to a press release, TikTok users searching for flood-related content will now see a visible banner on the app urging them to verify information through credible sources. This initiative aims to combat misinformation and help users make informed decisions during emergencies.

“This guide connects users directly with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), from where users in Pakistan can access verified information regarding natural disasters,” TikTok stated.

The platform’s new initiative includes access to TikTok’s Safety Centre and a direct link to its Tragic Event Support guide. This resource offers practical help to those affected by distressing events, including information on mental health support and responsible content sharing or reporting.

Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations in Pakistan, emphasized the importance of the platform’s partnership with disaster response agencies:

“We understand that during times of crisis, access to timely and accurate information is critical. By partnering with organisations that work directly with disaster response and making these resources more visible to our community, we aim to support informed decision-making and ensure user safety.”

This development follows recent concerns raised by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar regarding the spread of misinformation on social media. The government has expressed intentions to establish a separate authority to protect digital rights and counter online propaganda.

With millions of Pakistanis using TikTok, especially during critical times like monsoon season, this guide has the potential to play a vital role in minimizing risk, improving access to timely updates, and promoting public safety during natural disasters.
