Mufti Taqi Usmani Criticizes Lifetime Immunity for Officials, Calls It Against Islam

Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani has strongly criticized the proposal to grant lifetime immunity to high-ranking officials, stating that in Islam, no one is above judicial proceedings, regardless of the position they hold.

In a statement, Mufti Usmani referenced the Rightly Guided Caliphs as examples of leaders held accountable under Islamic law, emphasizing that even the highest authorities must answer to justice.

He noted that Pakistan’s earlier constitution had provided temporary immunity to the president during their term, which he described as already being against Islamic principles. “Now, giving this protection for life is completely against the spirit of Sharia and the constitution,” he said.

Mufti Usmani further warned that such immunity would be “very shameful for the country” and urged members of Parliament to refrain from approving the measure, stating that they should not take this “sin upon themselves.”

The scholar’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over constitutional amendments in Pakistan that could potentially expand protections for top officials, raising concerns about accountability and the rule of law in the country.
