A 17-year-old girl died by suicide in Punjab’s Muzaffargarh district after allegedly being raped and impregnated by her uncle and cousin, according to a police report filed on April 12.
The horrifying incident came to light when the victim’s father filed a First Information Report (FIR), stating that his daughter had recently confided in him and her elder sister about the sexual assault, which had occurred two months earlier. The girl reportedly named her paternal uncle and cousin as the perpetrators and revealed she had become pregnant as a result of the assault.
Tragically, her body was discovered around 4pm the same day, and her suicide was attributed to the trauma of the rape and the pregnancy. The grieving father demanded swift justice for his daughter and strict legal action against the accused.
Following the FIR, Muzaffargarh police spokesperson Wasim Khan Gopang confirmed that both suspects had been arrested and a case had been registered. District Police Officer (DPO) Rizwan Ahmad Khan vowed that those responsible would face the full force of the law.
"The culprits allegedly responsible for the death of the minor will be punished to the fullest extent," the DPO assured in a statement to the press.
This heart-wrenching case highlights the disturbing pattern of sexual violence committed by people known to the victims. According to Sahil, a leading child protection NGO, the majority of child sexual abuse cases in Pakistan involve family members or neighbors — individuals the victims know and often trust.
In a similarly tragic case last month, the rapists and killers of an 11-year-old girl in Bahawalpur were revealed to be her own relatives, including two maternal uncles.
These incidents raise grave concerns about the safety of children and adolescents within their own homes and communities, and underline the urgent need for stronger protective laws, social awareness, and victim support mechanisms.
The Muzaffargarh tragedy is not just a case — it is a stark call to action for society, lawmakers, and law enforcement agencies alike to prevent such horrors from repeating and to ensure that justice is swift, transparent, and uncompromising.
