NA Secretariat Seeks Details of Cases Against Omar Ayub for Fourth Time

The National Assembly Secretariat on Monday wrote a fourth letter to the opposition’s chief whip, Amir Dogar, requesting a written response detailing the status of court cases pending against former opposition leader Omar Ayub. The information is being sought to complete the constitutional process for appointing a new Leader of the Opposition in the lower house.

According to a press release issued by the National Assembly Secretariat spokesperson, previous letters regarding the same matter were sent on November 19, December 5, and December 19, 2025. However, despite repeated requests, no response has so far been received from the opposition chief whip.

The spokesperson stated that the provision of this information was essential to fulfil the constitutional requirements for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition. The Secretariat has also been made a party in certain sub judice cases involving the former opposition leader, making it necessary to obtain updated details on the status of those cases.

“In the letter, the Chief Whip of the Opposition has been requested to provide the requisite information regarding the current status of court cases pending against Omar Ayub, so that the process for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition may be completed,” the statement said.

It further clarified that the process to appoint a new opposition leader cannot move forward until the required information is formally received by the National Assembly Secretariat.

The post of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly has remained vacant since the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Omar Ayub in August following his conviction in cases linked to the May 9 riots. Since then, Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq has maintained that the matter is “sub judice,” contributing to the prolonged delay.

Subsequently, incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the position of opposition leader in the lower house. However, the appointment has yet to be finalised due to procedural and legal hurdles.

PTI leadership has repeatedly warned that continued delays in appointing the opposition leader could damage the credibility of parliament and weaken the democratic system. They argue that the absence of a formally recognised opposition leader undermines parliamentary oversight and balance.

With the fourth letter now issued, the National Assembly Secretariat has reiterated its position that compliance with constitutional and legal requirements is mandatory before proceeding with the appointment, keeping the matter at a standstill until a response is received.
