POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman on Monday strongly condemned India’s approval of the Dilhasti Stage II Hydropower Project on the Chenab River, calling it a blatant violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and an attack on Pakistan’s internationally recognised water rights.
In a statement, Sherry Rehman said that India’s controversial hydropower project amounted to unilateral action that undermined international agreements and global norms. She stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty could not be suspended or violated at the discretion of any single country, as it is a binding international agreement backed by global guarantees.
She warned that the project would pose serious risks to Pakistan’s water, agricultural and environmental security, adding that it could also have strategic and defence-related implications for the country. According to her, India’s actions reflected an attempt to use water as a weapon, further fuelling tensions and instability in South Asia.
Referring to recent developments, Sherry Rehman pointed out that the unusual decrease in water flow in the Chenab River over the past few days was clear evidence of what she described as Indian “water aggression.” She said such actions threatened the livelihood of millions of people dependent on the river system.
“Any attempt to establish a monopoly over Pakistan’s rivers will lead to dangerous consequences,” she warned, making it clear that water security was a non-negotiable issue for Pakistan. “Water is Pakistan’s red line. There will be no compromise on it,” she asserted.
Sherry Rehman further cautioned that if India failed to reverse its course, it would once again face strong resistance and consequences. She said Pakistan would actively raise the issue of violations of the Indus Waters Treaty at international forums and urged India to abandon unilateral measures and comply with its international obligations.
